Details:

The German engineering office is specialising in solar thermal applications for heating, cooling, desalination and power generation and offers a new system for 100% solar air-conditioning with high efficiency and performance.


State-of-the-art solar air-conditioning systems have a low energetic efficiency and performance. They require large solar fields, limiting the solar cooling capacity in dense city areas. Their economic efficiency is low and cooling performance does not coincide with the seasonal cooling demand.


Therefore the German SME has developed a 100% solar air-conditioning system that is charging a seasonal cold store all year round. During the summer the absorption chiller provides the air-conditioning base load whilst the cooling peak demand is covered by the cold store. The economic efficiency is higher compared to current systems and the improved energetic efficiency allows for a reduction of the solar field.


The 100% solar air-conditioning system consists of a parabolic trough collector solar field, which is generating steam directly from solar radiation. The lightweight parabolic trough collectors are designed for roof-top installation and are covered with glass sheets to protect the reflector and to ease regular cleaning. The solar generated steam is charging a variable pressure heat accumulator for provision of steam to the newly developed absorption chiller 24 hours a day for continuous operation.


The developed ammonia/water absorption chiller is highly efficient and designed to produce chilled water above and below freezing temperature at high ambient humidities. During winter when solar radiation is high but air-conditioning is not required the absorption chiller is producing minus temperatures for ice production in order to charge the seasonal cold store. The seasonal cold store, a highly insulated basin is filled with a water/ice mixture that is molten in summer to support the performance of the absorption chiller, which is then operating above freezing temperature with increased efficiency due to laws of thermodynamics.

The chilled water is used for sensible cooling of the activated building structure and for latent cooling with a newly developed regenerative air-handling unit for air-exchange with minimum energy requirement.

All in all the system consists of:


  1. Thermally activated building structure for radiation and convective cooling of the building heat load


2. A regenerative air-handling unit, which provides the ventilation with minimum energy requirement


3. A roof-mounted solar field consisting of lightweight parabolic trough collectors for direct steam generation


4. A thermal heat storage of sufficient capacity


5. A high-efficient absorption chiller which is capable of cooling and of ice production


6.A huge long-term cold storage which must be built on site at the client’s premises


7. Optionally a small steam turbine or steam engine for co-generation power generation in large installation


The 100% solar air-conditioning system can be operated standalone with or without connection to the electrical grid or can be operated in a hybrid air-conditioning system e.g. for higher buildings.


It is designed for all sun-rich countries for air-conditioning of single buildings, up to large interconnected installations e.g. city developments, factories, exhibition halls, district cooling, etc.


The SME is open to many kinds of co-operation. They could give project or area license and technical assistance for installation and operation to financially strong utilities, district cooling operators, construction firms, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) contractors, etc. Moreover, they are interested in a technical co-operation.

The system could also be adapted to special requirements of a partner.
